Communities in the Mid-West to benefit from sports grants
19/3/02
Communities in the Mid-West have been given a boost by the State Government in the latest round of the Community Sporting Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF), Minister for the Gascoyne Tom Stephens announced today.
In welcoming the funding, Mr Stephens said the allocation represented the delivery of the State Government's election commitment to inject a further $1.25million into the Community Sporting Recreation Facilities Fund.
"I am delighted that two thirds of the grants went to facilities in regional Western Australia," he said.
"The State Government is committed to increasing the level of physical activity among Western Australians and one way to achieve that is to help provide quality community sporting and recreation facilities."
Organisations to benefit include:
- Shire of Mullewa - $170,000 for the redevelopment of the Mullewa Recreation Centre. The new pavilion will complement existing facilities at the ground and provide a multi-purpose community club involving squash, lawn bowls, tennis, netball, aerobics and gym programs;
- Shire of Mt Magnet - $16,878 for the upgrade of the Memorial Swimming Pool. Upgrading of the swimming pool is part of a three-year redevelopment program which is considered a genuine priority for the isolated community due to extreme climatic conditions;
- Shire of Meekatharra - $38,369 for the upgrade of the swimming pool; and
- funding will provide for the upgrade of the plant room which will allow for the pool to continue to operate beyond this summer. The upgrade is part of a staged redevelopment project.
"The criteria used to grant the funding include economic viability, community need and consultation," Mr Stephens said.
"The CSRFF is a tremendous way for the State Government to bolster regional communities and work in partnership with them to develop their full potential."
