Community efforts ensure successful development of Karlkurla Bushland Park

The development of Karlkurla Bushland Park near Kalgoorlie has been a model community-driven conservation initiative, according to Environment and Heritage Minister Dr Judy Edwards.
A three year program to develop the nature park had recently been completed by the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Urban Landcare Group (KBULG). The 200ha of natural regrowth bushland is to become an A-class reserve.
Dr Edwards said today the park was a wonderful asset, both as a recreational area for local people and a tourist attraction.
"Many people share in the success of this project, including those in the community who fought to protect the area from subdivision," Dr Edwards said.
"In particular, the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Urban Landcare group must take much of the credit, managing such a major undertaking for the past three years.
"Recognition must also be given to the key contribution of people from Work for the Dole throughout the development.
"Most of the park's features were built by teams of scheme workers, including the walk trail, boardwalk entrance, picnic tables, look-out, signage, nursery and vegetable garden."
A regeneration zone for many years, Karlkurla Bushland Park was developed according to a landscape concept plan produced by the Department of Conservation and Land Management, in consultation with the community.
Dr Edwards said environmental education was expanding at the park, with the landcare group conducting guided walks along its loop-trail for tourists and local school children.
"As well, visitors can inform themselves about plants and points of interest along the trail, where there are some 50 plants identified thanks to signage prepared through the sponsorship of the city and by the Centenary of Federation WA," she said.
"Visitors are encouraged by city Tourist Centre staff to help propagate the karlkurla bush - known as silky pear or bush banana - by scattering seeds at the park from packets handed out at the centre."
The landcare group, which has strong sponsor support, aims to become the hub of a local environmental advisory network.
