Community input on the discovery centre for the Walpole Wilderness Area

Community meetings to assist in the development of concepts for a visitor centre in the proposed Walpole Wilderness Area will be held next month.
Environment Minister Judy Edwards said in line with the State Government's election policy to end the logging of old growth forests, $1million had been allocated to build a discovery centre and outdoor classroom in the Walpole Wilderness Area.
"The Walpole Wilderness Area Community Advisory Committee, the forum for community input into the management plan for the area, has indicated there is a high degree of interest on this issue in the community," Dr Edwards said.
"The committee has already begun considering the functions of the discovery centre, and has had some preliminary discussion on potential locations.
"CALM will be analysing several potential locations put forward by stakeholders, then working with the advisory committee to develop a set of options that will be taken to the wider community for discussion and feedback."
The Minister said the community meetings would explore community needs and aspirations for visitor services, recreation, community education and interpretation within the broader Walpole Wilderness Area.
"This centre is an excellent opportunity for the local community - and reflects the Government's serious commitment to ensure our unique environment is protected for future generations," she said.
Meetings are scheduled for Denmark on August 1 and for Walpole on August 2. Information sessions also are proposed for other communities bordering the proposed Walpole Wilderness Area.
