The State Government today showcased the progress made on the new multi-million-dollar Western Australian Maritime Museum currently under construction in Fremantle.
Housing and Works Minister Tom Stephens said the structure would provide about 5,000sq.m of space over two floors to house the museum's exhibitions.
"More than $36million has been provided for this state-of-the-art project," Mr Stephens said.
"The museum is the first project to be carried out under the master plan for the redevelopment of Fremantle's Victoria Quay waterfront area."
The Government Projects Office within the Department of Housing and Works and the Fremantle Port Authority are jointly responsible for implementing the master plan.
Perth-based company Cox Howlett & Bailey Woodland are the project architects for the museum and Multiplex, the builders.
Construction work is scheduled to be complete by May. Exhibition fit-out can then begin with the completed museum ready to open in late November this year.
Culture and Arts Minister Sheila McHale said the new maritime museum would look at WA's past and future as a community on the edge of the Indian Ocean.
"The new museum will have six thematic exhibition galleries, a travelling exhibition gallery, a function room with catering facilities, a 200-seat theatre and gift shop," Ms McHale said.
The six major exhibition themes include the Indian Ocean, Leisure - from tin canoe to Australia II, Fremantle and the Swan River, Fishing, Naval defence and Maritime trade.
"The museum will highlight the maritime traditions and culture of Aboriginal people alongside the many other cultures which have contributed to our modern multicultural society," Ms McHale said.
"It will house Australia II and several other significant craft. In addition, the HMAS Ovens, an Oberon-class submarine will also be located adjacent to the new building.
"The facility will also occupy the adjoining 'A' Shed, complementing the existing Maritime Museum in Cliff Street, Fremantle - which is to be retained as a centre for archaeological excellence and shipwreck gallery."
