The BankWest Wildcats' return visit to Bunbury this month for an NBL championship match against the West Sydney Razorbacks is yet another major achievement for the State Government's Country Sport Enrichment Scheme.
Acting Sport and Recreation Minister John Kobelke said the match, on Tuesday February 18 at the South West Sports Centre, would be part of a three-day visit to Bunbury during which the Wildcats would develop junior basketballers through visits to local schools and shopping centres.
"The State Government has provided $12,500 in funding through the Country Sport Enrichment Scheme, which is administered by the Department of Sport and Recreation," Mr Kobelke said.
"When both teams head home, basketball administrators in the South West will be left with plenty of experience in managing a major sporting event, while developing players will have spent time one-on-one with some of the best basketballers in Australia."
Local member Tony Dean said this tour to Bunbury would build on last year's highly successful visit by the Wildcats, which became the benchmark for the NBL to take more games to regional Australia.
"That's what the Country Sport Enrichment Scheme is all about - taking top-class sport to regional Western Australia," Mr Dean said.
Wildcats co-owner and executive director Andrew Vlahov thanked the State Government for supporting the Wildcat's regional games.
"I doubt that without the scheme we would have been able to convince the NBL to schedule more games in country Australia," Mr Vlahov said.
"Taking professional athletes to regional areas, encouraging new players and giving administrators event management experience is a three-pointer in anybody's books."
