Work has finished on a scheme water upgrade for the popular South-West community of Dalyellup.
The Dalyellup community, nine kilometres south of Bunbury, is at the northern end of the Shire of Capel. It is considered one of the fastest growing urban developments in Western Australia.
From a greenfields project in 1999, when 216 blocks were released on the open market, Dalyellup has grown to 1,110 blocks in 2003. Water Corporation projections suggest there will be 2,500 blocks by 2010.
Government Enterprises Minister Nick Griffiths said the $5.0million project included a major upgrade to the community's water treatment plant and construction of a large concrete water storage facility.
"The plant now includes an innovative water treatment unit, the first of its kind to be installed in WA and it combines the processes of aeration, clarification and sand filtration within one structure," Mr Griffiths said.
"The unit reduces high levels of iron - a common characteristic of groundwater around Bunbury - and produces a quality of drinking water which meets the Water Corporation's criteria for health and aesthetics."
The Minister praised the environmental and engineering management associated with Dalyellup's new, six-megalitre storage tank.
Constructed in an elevated position 500m north-west of Dalyellup, the recently commissioned tank will improve security of supply and a uniform level of water pressure to the ever-growing suburb.
"As part of the storage tank project, the Water Corporation sought the views of local environmental groups," Mr Griffiths said.
"The discussions resulted in the corporation agreeing to rehabilitate a number of coastal dune areas where motor vehicles and human activities have caused erosion and vegetation loss."
The Minister said the major water supply upgrade was designed to cater for estimated population growth in Dalyellup until at least 2010.
