A new multi-user bulk cargo export berth will be constructed at the Dampier Port to accommodate exports from major new gas processing projects.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan and State Development Minister Clive Brown announced the project as part of the State Government's commitment to invest more than $137million in infrastructure for new industries on the Burrup Peninsula.
Ms MacTiernan said the new facility was part of improvements at Dampier Port worth $56million.
"This new berth will service liquids tankers and can be upgraded to handle bulk solid cargo vessels without disrupting existing general cargo and supply operations on the Dampier Cargo Wharf," she said.
"The Government had considered modifying the existing wharf for some bulk liquid cargos, however a new facility is the best long-term option because it provides better operational outcomes and allows existing port users to expand their activities.
"Infrastructure such as this adds to Western Australia's attractiveness and competitiveness as a destination for new investment and major project development."
State Development Minister Clive Brown welcomed the decision, saying it reflected the Government's broader commitment to supporting and encouraging new industries processing the State's natural gas into valuable export products.
"The first project expected to use the new bulk cargo export facility is Burrup Fertilisers' 760,000 tonne per annum liquid ammonia project which commenced on-site development in May," Mr Brown said.
"Other potential users include the methanol plants proposed by Methanex and Liquigaz (GTL Resources) and Dampier Nitrogen's ammonia/urea project.
"The Government's commitment to providing this key infrastructure should help encourage more companies to commit to their projects."
Burrup MLA Fred Riebeling welcomed the announcement saying it would strengthen confidence in local communities.
"New investment on the Burrup will help secure a better future for our communities by increasing employment and business opportunities," Mr Riebeling said.
Work on the new port facility was expected to commence late in 2003, with completion in mid-2005.
