Dennis Lillee to develop WA's future fast bowlers
11/6/02
Promising young cricketers from regional Western Australia will have a chance to learn from one of Australia's greatest fast bowlers through a partnership program between the Department of Sport and Recreation and the Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA).
Sport and Recreation Minister Alan Carpenter said today he was pleased to announce State Government support for the Dennis Lillee Fast Bowling Academy.
"The Department of Sport and Recreation's Academy of Sport Program is providing $30,000 from the Sport Lottery Account to support the Dennis Lillee Fast Bowling Academy for three years," Mr Carpenter said.
"I remember watching Dennis Lillee in action at the WACA and joined the crowd chanting his name as he took his famous long run-up from the river end.
"Having him back in WA developing promising young players is a dream come true for me as a cricket fan, and as a Minister."
The Department of Sport and Recreation's Academy of Sport Program works with State sporting associations, private industry and the general community to identify and develop regional sporting talent.
The Dennis Lillee Fast Bowling Academy will build on this to provide opportunities for 30 talented 16-19-year-old cricketers State-wide to take part in elite fast bowling training and education programs headed up by Dennis Lillee himself.
Mr Carpenter said the Dennis Lillee Fast Bowling Academy would provide:
- State-wide talent identification;
- intensive training camps and clinics;
- high performance coaching;
- athlete training regimes and practices;
- access to sports science;
- access to high performance competition;
- access to training facilities;
- athlete career and education;
- athlete scholarship programs; and
- coach education and training.
"It is appropriate that the State Government supports someone of his calibre to develop future sporting champions."
