Department of Agriculture staff embracing 'Green Travel' plans

Department of Agriculture staff are leading the way in promoting environmentally-friendly travel through a Green Personal Transport Plan.
The plan was officially launched yesterday by Environment Minister Judy Edwards as part of the State Government's TravelSmart Workplace Program and Air Quality Management Plan.
The overall aim is to help protect Perth's air quality and promote a balanced transport system.
Agriculture Minister Kim Chance praised staff for their initiative in promoting the use of greener transport alternatives among the 700 employees at the department's South Perth headquarters.
"The plan identifies how staff can reduce unnecessary solo car trips and encourages cycling, walking, public transport and car-pooling, thereby contributing as a whole to sustainable practices," Mr Chance said.
"Some elements of the plan have already been implemented, including the purchase of fleet bicycles, lunch-time forums to encourage greener travel and installation of bike parking for visitors.
"Other recommended actions include providing staff with information on travel options through their intranet and establishing a register of people interested in car-pooling."
The Minister said that on average, 75 per cent of the South Perth staff drove alone to and from work, including many who lived within walking or cycling distance, were close to direct public transport services or had access to people with whom they could car-pool.
"Many staff have already expressed a keen interest in improving the attractiveness of 'green' travel choices and their uptake is pivotal to the success of the plan," he said.
"An important flow-on effect is the increase in physical activity of staff for good health and vitality in the workforce, thereby increasing productivity."
Mr Chance said through this plan and its other 'Greening the Department' initiatives the department was demonstrating leadership to other organisations and the community.
The Department of Agriculture is one of five State Government departments developing a Green Transport Plan and a group of South Perth staff was the driving force.
The Green Personal Transport Plan will be expanded to include the department's regional offices where possible.
