Diverse range of activities for Adult Learners' Week

Children teaching grandparents to SMS on mobile phones will be part of Adult Learners' Week, launched today by Education and Training Minister Alan Carpenter.
Adult Learners' Week, which will run from Wednesday, September 1 until Wednesday, September 8, showcases how community, private and Government organisations work together to foster and promote lifelong learning.
"The week has been celebrated internationally and in Western Australia since 1995 and this year the events which have been organised will place a particular emphasis on sharing skills and ideas across different age groups and boundaries," Mr Carpenter said.
"There will be a wide range of activities across WA during the week to recognise the organisations and people who enhance the lives of individuals and strengthen communities through adult community education.
"A diverse range of informal learning options is made available through community learning centres, TAFEWA Colleges, telecentres, seniors' education groups and local libraries.
"Awards which recognise the outstanding contributions made by individual learners, tutors, students and volunteers will be made at a special dinner to be held at the Alexander library at the end of the week."
The Minister also congratulated the Adult Learners' Week organising committee for its efforts in organising the week-long celebration in conjunction with the Department of Education and Training.
"The Gallop Government is committed to improving the skills of all Western Australians regardless of age," he said.
"If a 15-year-old wants to learn a trade or a 45-year-old wants to improve literacy or numeracy skills, our education and training sector should be able to accommodate both."
