An Internet service used by 56 WA Government agencies - ServiceNet - has received a prestigious national award for 'communication solutions.'
ServiceNet promotes the business of Government, enabling the business community and government to interact online. It is a gateway to other services, such as the Government Electronic Market, where businesses can register to supply the Government or tender for Government contracts.
ServiceNet was co-winner of this year's award for Best Communications Solution - Large Business adjudicated by ATUG, the Australian Telecommunication Users' Group.
The Department of Industry and Technology (DoIT) developed and runs the Internet service in partnership with four private sector service providers: MCI WorldCom Aust Pty Ltd, AlphaWest 6, Amcom Telecommunications and Telstra Australia.
State Development Minister Clive Brown said today the award was further recognition of DoIT's ability to develop and employ leading-edge Internet-based technologies for Government online services.
"ServiceNet has been developed from scratch in a special partnership with private sector ICT companies - a 'hand-built' network that is far more than a triumph of fibre optic technology," Mr Brown said.
"Clients across Government have access to a highly secure network that is monitored around the clock. Equally importantly, they can use a range of services which help them to set up new Internet or intranet systems, expand existing ones, or ensure their systems are highly secure."
Mr Brown said the department had been a genuine pioneer three years ago in its adoption of fibre optic technology. This forward thinking had enabled ServiceNet to handle an 'explosion' of demand caused by a massive Internet rollout by the public sector.
"Throughout this period the service has set benchmarks for excellence in customer service and responsiveness, validated by high level audits, client surveys and now this award," the Minister said.
