The new Western Australian Parliament extensions will provide business for the Donnybrook region, Housing and Works Minister Tom Stephens said today.
Mr Stephens said Donnybrook stone had been specified in the extension contract and this would be sourced from local quarries.
The Minister toured Donnybrook quarries and inspected suitable stone as part of his Regional Cabinet duties.
"I am told that the stone chosen will match that used on the existing Parliament House building and that the Heritage Council has no concerns," he said.
"I am always delighted to see the regions benefiting from Government purchases and never more so than when a regional product, like Donnybrook Stone, will be displayed in the centre of the city as part of Parliament House.
"The projects to build the new three-storey northern extension and associated works to upgrade the kitchen and courtyard will be managed by the Department of Housing and Works on behalf of the Parliamentary Services Department.
"The northern extension will be a reflection of the southern extension completed in 1978, and will consist primarily of offices to relieve the congested accommodation that currently exists at Parliament House."
Mr Stephens said the $2.48million construction works, won by Cooper and Oxley Builders, were expected to be near completion by mid-September this year.
