Environmental approval for Kemerton power plant
11/2/04
Environmental approval has been granted for a 260megawatt gas fired power station at Kemerton Industrial Estate, near Bunbury, Environment Minister Judy Edwards announced today.
The $250million peak load facility would be built, owned and operated by Transfield Services Limited.
The Environmental Protection Authority assessed the proposal in December last year and recommended approval be granted, subject to certain conditions.
During the construction phase the proponent must prepare management plans relating to flora and fauna; groundwater, surface and stormwater, air emissions and dust; solid and liquid waste; community consultation; dewatering; Aboriginal heritage and other areas. Similar plans would have to also be prepared while the plant was up and running (operational phase).
"The Government is pleased this project can now proceed," Dr Edwards said.
"It is an important part of our plan to modernise power generation in Western Australia."
