Exmouth's former town tip site is to have a new life as part of the eagerly-awaited Exmouth Marina Village.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said remediation of the tip site was one of the first steps towards the village becoming a reality.
Ms MacTiernan said major construction work, managed by LandCorp the State Government's land development agency, would start later this year.
"Exmouth Marina Village will bring long-awaited new facilities, increase opportunities for tourism and reinforce the Gascoyne region's status as a world-renowned holiday destination, " she said.
"The 79ha development will accommodate a canal-front residential estate, a tourist resort, a mixed-use commercial/residential zone and services for the local fishing and marine industries.
"The development enhances the $15million Exmouth Boat Harbour completed in the mid-1990s."
Ms MacTiernan said the Shire of Exmouth was undertaking the remediation, which involved excavating and removing approximately 45,000 cubic metres of waste material and levelling and tidying up at the completion of excavation.
The waste material, which had been identified as mainly general household refuse, scrap material and building rubble, would be taken to a landfill site on Preston Road, to the south of the Exmouth township.
All excavation and removal would be carried out in strict accordance with the Remediation Management Program specifications approved by the Department of Environmental Protection.
The work is expected to take almost two months to complete. During this time the area would be fenced off, with dust fencing and warning signs in place.
Trucks fitted with sealed tailgates would be used to transport the waste material to Preston Road and each load would be covered by a layer of clean, watered-down fill. An equipment washdown bay would operate and water sprays would help dust control.
The remaining half of the landfill would be consolidated at a later stage, to be transformed into public open space as part of the marina village project.
LandCorp, appointed by the State Government to manage the Exmouth Marina Village Project, is working closely with the local community, the Gascoyne Development Commission and the Department for Planning and Infrastructure.
