ExxonMobil to support Western Australia's top teachers
11/11/05
The Teacher of the Year awards program has received a major boost with one of the world's largest oil and gas companies ExxonMobil coming on board as a sponsor.
Education and Training Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich today announced that ExxonMobil would contribute $45,000 towards the prestigious awards program.
"In addition to the prize money, the Teacher of the Year winner and two finalists will receive a $5,000 prize from ExxonMobil for their school or TAFEWA," Ms Ravlich said.
"The school or TAFEWA will use the money to buy educational resources and equipment."
Today's announcement coincided with the naming of the successful 56 school teachers and 15 TAFEWA lecturers who have been chosen as winners in the second round of this years awards program.
"As a former teacher, I can truly appreciate the high expectations placed on teachers and lecturers by students, parents, their schools and the community in general," the Minister said.
"We can be proud we have so many enthusiastic, talented and committed teachers in Western Australia.
"Each winner will receive a certificate and $1,000, and will compete for the $25,000 title of Premier's Teacher of the Year for 2005."
ExxonMobil vice president of Australian LNG Luke Musgrave said the company was very pleased to join with the State Government to support this worthwhile awards program.
"We hope that our sponsorship helps improve school communities and student learning," Mr Musgrave said.
"The sponsorship money will ensure that this year's award not only recognises the individual achievement of the teacher or lecturer, but also celebrates the achievements of their school or TAFEWA college."
While only in its second year, the Teacher of the Year program is already recognised as the State's most prestigious award for teaching excellence.
The 2005 Premier's Teacher of the Year will be selected from round winners in three categories (primary school, secondary school and TAFEWA lecturers) and will be announced at a breakfast on Monday, December 5.
