Eyre Highway upgrade will improve safety - reduce maintenance
21/11/02
Nearly 18km of Eyre Highway east of Caiguna is to be upgraded under a $7.11million contract awarded to Highway Construction Pty Ltd.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said work on realigning and reconstructing the section would start in December, 2002 and be completed by April, 2003.
"Eyre Highway is a critical link with the Eastern seaboard, and along with Great Eastern Highway provides WA with its major road lifeline to the east," Ms MacTiernan said.
"Some 1.2million tonnes of freight is transported along the highway each year. An average of 332 vehicles per day travel the highway, with about 80 of them heavy vehicles."
The works will improve safety with the upgrading of curves and will lower future maintenance costs.
The project is being funded by the Commonwealth through the National Highway and Interstate Road Transport Programs.
