Information on science publications covering flora, fauna and forests from the mid-1700s to the present day is now available online.
Making the announcement as part of Science Week celebrations, Environment and Heritage Minister Dr Judy Edwards said the Department of Conservation and Land Management's entire Science Library Collection (CONSLib) was now available for public searching via the Internet.
Dr Edwards said the online library collection was a comprehensive database containing international, national and State science publications - numbering more than 55,000 items.
"This extensive collection for the first time will be available to the public and encompasses journals, books, videos, microfilm, photos, maps, historical brochures and posters," she said.
"By providing this service online people can readily determine what is contained in the collection and then visit one of the department's three libraries to access the information."
Dr Edwards said the collection was divided into three parts - Forest Science, WA Herbarium and Wildlife Science.
"The Forest Science collection holds the main stock of books and journals on forestry, with a small special collection on environmental education for teachers as well as departmental publications, WA statutes and a collection of slides and historical photos," she said.
"The Herbarium collection contains material on botanical subjects, along with books and journals, contains microfiche, original illustrations, maps and coloured slides of native plants.

"The Wildlife Science collection holds the main stock of books and journals on the environment, ecology, conservation, wildlife, national parks and nature reserves."
Dr Edwards said that though people could not borrow the resources, the public was able to view and photocopy the resources at the library by making an appointment with departmental library staff.
"Providing people with access to information is a top priority for the State Government and by having information on the department's library collection online, we are ensuring people have easy access to science publications that determine conservation management of flora and fauna," she said
"The collection also contained a comprehensive bibliography of all research conducted on Western Australia's flora, fauna and forest since the 1890s."
