A new town planning strategy for Fitzroy Crossing is being released for public comment today by Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan.
The plan will be used to provide a framework for a number of initiatives already under way such as the provision of a new school site and facilities, the establishment of a community resource centre, and a new power station.
Community groups came together in 2000 to hold a conference in Fitzroy Crossing to discuss the future of the town.
Planning for the townsite and surrounds was one of three priority initiatives identified.
"The Gallop Government and the Western Australian Planning Commission (WAPC) have been working with the community since then to develop a town plan for the area to identify opportunities, manage future growth and to achieve integration between the town and its Aboriginal communities," Ms MacTiernan said.
"Community layout plans have been used to determine suitable designs for community areas based on sound planning principles and the aspirations of residents.
"These were prepared for the Junjuwa, Burawa, Bungardi, Darlgunaya, Kurnangki and Parukupan areas under the Department of Housing and Works Town Reserves Regularisation Program."
The Fitzroy Futures Town Plan was prepared through strong collaboration between the WAPC, the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley, Bunuba Incorporated and community and industry stakeholders.
Fitzroy Crossing has long been the traditional home of the Bunuba people.
"Some of the initiatives under the draft town plan include a proposal to transfer some land in Fitzroy Crossing to Bunuba management, efforts to further progress the study into the land requirements for a new school, and action to complete a business plan for the construction of a community resource centre," Ms MacTiernan said.
"Furthermore, the plan looks at establishing a Water Source Protection Plan to help protect Fitzroy Crossing's public drinking water supply.
"The public comment period provides a final opportunity for community members to make sure the plan meets their needs."
