Focus on women's interests to be strengthened

Western Australian women can be assured of a stronger voice in State Government following a review announced today by Women's Interests Minister Sheila McHale.
Ms McHale said she has convened a reference group to review existing consultative mechanisms, processes and structures within the women's interests portfolio.
"The reference group will determine the best framework to enable the State Government to improve opportunities and outcomes for women and meet their needs in the 21st century," she said.
"It will also advise on strategies to engage all sectors of the community to work in genuine partnership with the Government.
"The focus is on strengthening communities by adopting an inclusive approach to social issues, providing support for women and ensuring an administrative structure that is responsive to their needs."
The reference group comprises six members and is chaired by Ms Maxine Murray, director of the Equal Opportunity and Public Employment Office.
Other members are Hon Louis Pratt MLC, Robyn Daniels, Maria Osman, Judy Hogben, Sarina Jan and Lois Gatley.
The review will include the Women's Advisory Council and other advisory bodies, and involve consultations with relevant groups and peak agencies.
The group will make its recommendations by mid-September 2001.
Ms McHale said the review was part of the Government's comprehensive reform of the public sector and reflected the Government's directions in social policy.
"The Government is moving away from the traditional welfare-based approach to one based on community development where all sectors are actively engaged in developing policies, plans and services that address the needs of all members of the community," she said.
