Free entry to Whiteman Park
10/12/02
An early Christmas present for visitors to the ever-popular Whiteman Park - fees of up to $5 per car will no longer apply.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said today the fees had been dropped to encourage more public use of the extensive picnic grounds and facilities based around Mussel Pool and the Whiteman Village.
Ms MacTiernan today also officially opened a new entrance to the Park on Beechboro Road North.
"Whiteman Park is a long established recreation and conservation reserve that enjoys considerable success and free entry is expected to bring substantial numbers of new visitors into the park," she said.
The fees and charges to the park's many attractions remain at reasonable levels starting from as little as $1.50 up to $6.
Attractions include the Motor Museum of WA, craft shops and the weekend and school holiday programs provided by transport heritage groups comprising the trams, trains and the Tractor Museum of WA.
"The park has extensive facilities including kiosks and electric barbeques, cycle and bush walk trails and tennis and volleyball courts," the Minister said.
"The park also offers a range of recreational, event and education programs on a year round basis.
"With the relocation of Caversham Wildlife Park due to be completed by Easter, Whiteman Park offers something for everyone."
Western Australian Planning Commission chairman Terry Martin said the new entry road into the park would provide easy access for visitors coming from the west and south of the park.
Mr Martin said the three-kilometre road had been designed to provide visitors with a scenic drive, taking advantage of natural contours, with minimum environmental impact.
"There will be two locations, near the entrance and overlooking the park village, where dedicated parking areas will provide sweeping vistas of the park and beyond," he said.
