Freehold offer for Kalgoorlie Boulder residential leases
17/1/02
Kalgoorlie-Boulder's remaining 12 99-year residential lessees will have another chance to convert their properties to freehold at concessional rates.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan has decided to offer leaseholders a 50 per cent reduction in the purchase price and two years to pay through eight interest free instalments.
Ms MacTiernan said the offer was made following approaches from the Member for Eyre, Mr John Bowler.
"After discussions with John, I agreed that it was only fair that the leaseholders, be offered terms similar to those which saw 131 similar properties converted in 1993," she said.
"The price will be based on the unimproved value of the land as set by an independent private valuer and verified by the Valuer General.
"The Department of Lands Administration (DOLA) will write to the leaseholders informing them of the offer."
Mr Bowler said the generous offer was further evidence of the Gallop Government's recognition of the Goldfields and its people.
"This should be welcomed by the few remaining residential leaseholders as increases in rental values continue to create problems for them," he said.
"I will be personally contacting each leaseholder to ensure they understand the terms of the offer."
The residential leases date back as far as the early 1920s, when this form of land title was commonly used when Crown Land was subdivided and sold.
