Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour has a facelift
2/9/03
The State Government has completed improvements to the popular restaurant precinct within the Fishing Boat Harbour at Fremantle.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the $400,000 construction project would further improve an area which was already a world-class tourist attraction.
Ms MacTiernan said the low level boardwalk linking waterfront fishmarkets, restaurants and cafes had been extended by more than 40 metres.
"The boardwalk extension will greatly improve public access to the area," the Minister said.
"Previously, people had to walk around dining chairs and tables in this area often causing discomfort for dining patrons and concern for restaurateurs.
"Now people will have clear access to the waterfront past Kailis Fishmarket and Caf?."
Ms MacTiernan said the boardwalk extension would also allow for safer berthing of small recreational vessels and charter passenger vessels visiting the area.
"In addition to the boardwalk extension, the adjacent tenant, Kailis Fishmarket and Caf?, has paid for the construction of an attractive dining podium as part of the project," the Minister said.
"These joint efforts will ease overcrowding and improve access along the waterfront during peak holiday periods."
Harbour managers, the Department for Planning and Infrastructure undertook the construction project after consultation with local business owners and the Fremantle Maritime Facilities Advisory Committee.
The department engaged Perth based consulting engineers Worley Infrastructure and North Fremantle maritime construction company, Marine and Civil Construction Pty Ltd as part of the project.
Work on the improvements was scheduled for quiet trading periods and noise and vibration levels were monitored closely.
Ms MacTiernan said parts of the original boardwalk and the new dining podium would be leased to Kailis Fishmarket and Caf? increasing the revenue from the harbour.
The next project at this location will be the construction of the Founding Fishermen's Monument in recognition of the original fishing families of the area.
"This will further contribute to the exciting atmosphere of Fremantle with its unique blend of history, maritime activity and diversity of recreational and entertainment opportunities, " the Minister said.
