Fremantle Justice Complex opened
11/4/01
The Minister for Justice and Legal Affairs Jim McGinty has officially opened the new $15 million Fremantle Justice Complex in Holdsworth Street.
"This contemporary building symbolises the 21st century while also representing an appropriate progression from traditional Fremantle architecture," Mr McGinty said.
"The Fremantle Justice Complex is also special because of the significance of justice in this historic port city and the outstanding facility's landmark design.
"However, the main result is that justice will be easily accessible to the people of Fremantle in a modern, user-friendly environment."
The complex incorporates the latest in technology, such as video link, remote witness rooms, electronic courts case management and the electronic lodgement of court documents.
The first District Court sitting will occur on June 18, 2001 - an impossibility in the small, cramped quarters of the old courthouse in Henderson Street, which was built by convict labour more than 100 years ago.
"Jury trials will be facilitated by a modern jury trial courtroom in the new complex," Mr McGinty said.
The complex consists of one jury room, three magistrate's courtrooms, one children's courtroom/magistrate's courtroom, secure custodial area, judicial officers' chambers and offices for the courts' administration, community-based services and the Bailiff.
"Fremantle is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city, which is reflected in this new facility that should last well into the next century," the Minister said.
The Fremantle Justice Complex was built by Multiplex Constructions (WA) Pty Ltd and will be leased by the State Government for the next 25 years until it reverts back to the State.
