Fruitful boost for Food Bank
5/6/01
Community Development Minister Sheila McHale today announced a one-off grant of $20,000 for the Kalgoorlie Boulder Foodbank.
The food bank is a partnership between business and community groups to provide emergency food for local people in need.
Ms McHale said the money would be used to buy a vehicle so the food bank could expand their service to remote communities and towns in the Goldfields.
"Foodbank is an innovative scheme that acts as a bridge between the food industry and local community groups and services," she said.
"Food donated to the bank by businesses is distributed to local organisations and charities for people on low incomes in emergency or crisis situations.
"In February, the Kalgoorlie Boulder Foodbank distributed more than 3,000 kilograms of food."
Ms McHale said she was pleased to be spearheading an election commitment that was initiated by the former Australian Labour Party Member for Kalgoorlie Megan Anwyl.
"This Government is keen to support initiatives involving fruitful partnerships between community groups, businesses and Government," the Minister said.
"We will work to consolidate and extend valuable community initiatives and create a co-ordinated system of programs for developing the community."
