Funding partnership delivers new road access to Ellenbrook
18/2/04
A three-way funding arrangement will enable the construction of a much-needed second access road to the Ellenbrook Estate in Perth's north-eastern corridor.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan and Swan Hills MLA Jaye Radisich today handed over a cheque for $800,000 as the Gallop Government's contribution to the construction of the new road link.
The project will cost approximately $2.4million with funding also set to be sourced from the Swan City Council and the Ellenbrook Joint Venture developer.
The road will run northward from Gnangara Road, 500m west of the existing Lord Street/Pinaster Parade/Gnangara Road intersection. It will follow the alignment set aside for the future Perth-Darwin National Highway for a distance of 2.3km, linking in with the future westward extension of The Promenade.
"This new access will have strategic importance as well as delivering a second route into and out of Ellenbrook - the decision follows intense lobbying by the local member, Jaye Radisich," Ms MacTiernan said.
"Ellenbrook has just one access point and the provision of this second access will make it easier for people to get in and out of the estate. It will be important also in times of any future emergency which could place pressure on a single access point.
"Construction will be managed by the City of Swan, and the road will be delivered as early as later this year, depending on environmental and heritage approvals."
Ms Radisich said the funding partnership was good news for Ellenbrook residents.
"We had a situation last year in which a fuel tanker overturned at the one and only entrance to Ellenbrook, closing access to the estate for some four hours," she said.
"A second access point is long overdue, and this project will give people greater confidence."
Ms MacTiernan said early planning for the Ellenbrook section of the future Perth-Darwin Highway was completed and included in the Metropolitan Region Scheme in 1994.
More detailed planning and project development will now be undertaken, including finalisation of the cost estimate.
