Premier Geoff Gallop today announced that the State Government's highly successful Waterwise Rebate Program would be extended for a further two years.
Dr Gallop also announced that a new range of products would be added to the rebate scheme and that the eligibility criteria for washing machine rebates would be upgraded.
"Since its inception in 2003, the Waterwise Rebate Program has delivered 6.4 billion litres of ongoing water savings throughout Western Australia," he said.
"Western Australians have clearly shown they understand and appreciate that water is a precious resource that needs to be conserved.
"My Government is committed to protecting and enhancing our unique lifestyle and environment. That is why I am pleased to extend the Waterwise scheme for a further two years and for a wider range of water saving products."
Pool covers, subsurface irrigation systems, waterwise garden assessments and rain sensors have joined water-efficient washing machines, showerheads, garden bores, soil wetting agents, rain water tanks, flow regulators and grey water systems as products eligible for a rebate after purchase.
The rebate for the new products will apply from July 1.
The program has so far cost $21million, with an estimated $18million due to be spent over the next two years.
The additional products are expected to contribute to an extra saving of 2.5 billion litres on top of the 6.4 billion litres already being saved through the program.
The Premier said the outstanding success of the washing machine rebate had revolutionised the washing machine industry across Australia.
"When the program was introduced at the start of 2003, there were less than 10 models rated at a water efficiency of 4A or better," he said.
"There are now 173 such machines available on the market.
"We provided the impetus for that huge increase, so now we have decided to lift the bar again and start the rebate eligibility for washing machines at a minimum 5A rating.
"I am confident this initiative will have a similar impact on the washing machine industry as the previous program had and deliver even greater water efficiency benefits."
The Waterwise Rebate Program has developed into a key plank in the State Government's response to the challenges faced by the drying climate and its effect on water supplies.
There has been enormous community support, with more than 180,000 householders from all parts of WA taking up the offer to get a rebate for waterwise appliances and products.
Dr Gallop said there was no one simple solution to the water shortage issue.
"My Government is securing our water future through diversity," he said.
"We are implementing short, medium and long-term strategies involving new sources, innovative ways of reusing wastewater and new efficiency measures including the rebate program."
Information brochures and rebate forms are available from retail outlets selling products, appliances and services that qualify for the Waterwise Rebate Program. Details of the scheme are also available on the website:http://www.ourwaterfuture.com.au
