An innovative, new waste education program for schools aimed at helping students cut back waste and encourage greater recycling will be launched by the State Government today.
The Waste Wise Schools program provides schools with the tools for planning, implementing and maintaining waste minimisation projects such as recycling, composting and worm farming.
The program will be launched at Mosman Park City Council's Recycle Olympics event where local school children will participate in a range of fun waste activities.
Environment and Heritage Minister Dr Edwards said the program encouraged schools to adopt a whole-school community approach to waste minimisation with input from school management, teaching and support staff, parents and students.
"The Waste Wise Schools program is an excellent way of enabling children to understand they can have a very real and positive impact on helping to stop the pollution of our environment.
"Reducing waste can help preserve biodiversity, reduce Greenhouse gas emissions and save water - all very important local and global environmental concerns," she said.
The Waste Wise Schools program was piloted successfully in six metropolitan schools during first term this year.
Dr Edwards said some Western Australian schools were already achieving amazing results from waste minimisation projects.
"Some of these schools have agreed to provide leadership and advice to schools just starting out in the program," she said.
"These Support Schools provide an invaluable wealth of knowledge and experience to others as well as demonstrating that waste minimisation does work in the school environment."
The Waste Wise Schools program offers professional development workshops, comprehensive resources and ongoing access to information and advice.
The Waste Wise Schools program was adapted from the successful Victorian program for WA schools with help from the Curriculum Council, education groups and teachers.
Managed by the Department of Environmental Protection, the program is funded by the Waste Management and Recycling Fund.
