Gosnells SHS new purpose-built Middle School facility nears completion

Premier Geoff Gallop and Education Minister Alan Carpenter today visited Gosnells Senior High School to inspect its new purpose-built Middle School facility.
Construction work on the facility - Stage One of the Government's $7million election commitment to upgrade the 26-year-old high school - will be completed by December.
The building has been designed to cater for the delivery of the middle schooling teaching model, which was introduced at Gosnells Senior High in 2000.
The teaching model is designed to support Year Eight and Nine students in their transition from primary to high school.
"The new facility will provide the ideal learning environment for the delivery of the middle schooling model," Dr Gallop said.
"It will enable closer relationships to be forged between students and teachers, resulting in better academic and personal outcomes for students and more rewarding teaching experiences for staff.
"Gosnells Senior High School has an outstanding reputation for providing a range of innovative educational programs that focus on relationships, values, pastoral care and interpersonal skills.
"I commend staff for their commitment and initiative and I am confident that this state-of-the-art new facility will help them to build on this success."
Education Minister Alan Carpenter said that under the middle school model at Gosnells SHS, Years Eight and Nine students were divided into learning teams called 'homerooms'.
"Each homeroom is overseen by a team of four specialist teachers who work together as a group, developing a detailed knowledge of each student's individual learning needs," Mr Carpenter said.
The Premier and Education Minister also used their visit to Gosnells SHS to view the master plan for Stage Two of the $7million redevelopment project.
Stage Two will include the construction of a new technology and enterprise centre, a new performing arts centre, upgrading the administration area and extending and renovating the library.
Work on Stage Two is expected to start at the beginning of 2004.
