Government's new Taiwan business representative visits WA
14/3/03
The State Government's newly appointed senior business manager in Taiwan is visiting the State to gain first-hand information on the Focus Taiwan project.
Nicholas Nicholas McKay is working with the Department of Agriculture to develop a 12-month action plan in support of the project.
Items on the agenda include projects to increase Western Australian exports of meat, milk, seafood, fruit and vegetables, processed food and flour to Taiwan.
The Focus Taiwan project was established in 1998 by the Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with the former Department of Industry and Technology, to promote trade to Taiwan and investment opportunities in WA.
Agriculture Minister Kim Chance said the project had been used as a platform to forge closer links between the Taiwanese and WA agribusiness sectors, encompassing the full spectrum of business development, investment and promotion.
"Taiwan is the State's seventh-largest agricultural and fisheries export market worth over $171million," Mr Chance said.
"It is important that the face of the WA Government in Taiwan is maintained at a high level to ensure the ongoing success of exports from the State.
"The senior business manager in Taiwan, Nicholas McKay, has extensive experience in the commercial sector in Taiwan and will contribute greatly to increased business development.
"This will be achieved through close interaction between companies in WA and Taiwan and support from Government departments."
Mr McKay is visiting Perth until March 22.
