Government commits to a family healing centre
24/3/02
Victims of domestic violence in the Derby region will benefit from a purpose-built safe house, Housing and Works Minister Tom Stephens said.
During a visit to Derby, Mr Stephens said tenders had been called (March 23) for the Family Healing Centre, which was being funded under the Department of Housing and Works' Crisis Accommodation Program.
"The aim of the service is to provide family support, healing and crisis accommodation to victims of family violence and to promote culturally-based counselling and healing services to keep families together," he said.
"A main refuge will be purpose-built to house women and children escaping domestic violence and will include five bedrooms, two bathrooms, carer's room, meeting room, office, waiting room, store, laundry, dining room, kitchen, living room and a verandah.
"The building will also cater for disabled clients.
"A separate, three-bedroom home, to be built adjacent to the main refuge, is a new concept and will provide temporary accommodation to help reunite a male perpetrator with his family, in order to begin the healing process."
Mr Stephens said the facility would be built on land in Baobab Street and once completed, it would be leased to Marnin Bowa Dumbara Aboriginal Corporation.
