Government grants to boost youth arts projects
29/12/04
Arts workshops, festivals, dance and theatre projects are set to come to life, thanks to further Government investment in young people and the arts.
Grants totalling $136,656 have been awarded to three Youth Creative Development Fellowships and 16 arts projects to be produced by or for 18 to 25-year-olds in 2005.
Culture and Arts Minister Sheila McHale said investing in young people's arts projects contributed to the development of Western Australia's vibrant and diverse artistic and cultural community.
"The variety and quality of projects supported by the grants demonstrate the creativity, enthusiasm and contribution of young artists and organisations to the cultural life of the State," Ms McHale said.
The three $10,000 Fellowships would fund established artists to advance their skills with international experience:
- Daniel Susnjar, of North Perth, will spend three months in New York focusing on compositional techniques in percussion. An accomplished young drummer, percussionist and composer, Mr Susnjar is a highly talented musician whose performing credits include working with James Morrison and Frank Foster.
- Molly Tipping, of West Perth, will develop contemporary dance practice over a 10-month research period in Perth, Sydney and Stockholm. Ms Tipping graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and has become one of the State's most talented emerging independent dance practitioners.
- Bonnie Davies, of West Leederville, will join contemporary arts company Blast Theory in the UK for a three-month internship to develop curatorial and arts management skills for contemporary art projects. Ms Davies is a multi-talented arts administrator and recipient of a 2004 City of Perth Premier Citizenship Award for Under 26.
