The State Government will contribute over $15,000 towards the improvement of airport facilities at Katanning, Minister Assisting the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure Michelle Roberts said today.
Mrs Roberts was announcing this year's recipients of funding under the Regional Airports Development Scheme (RADS).
Under the scheme, a total of 19 airports across the State, including five North-West Aboriginal communities, will receive funding for a variety of works.
Mrs Roberts said that $15,903 would be contributed to the re-sealing of the apron and construction of an ambulance port at Katanning airport.
"The apron surface at Katanning Airport is considered too rough to allow the smooth movement of stretchers to and from Royal Flying Doctor Service aircraft, so a section of the apron needs to be re-sealed with a special smooth asphalt," she said.
"Also, patients are currently protected by tarpaulins and require a more protected area to disembark the ambulance and be prepared for aircraft travel."
The total value of RADS projects in 2001-2002 is $7.6 million, of which the Government will contribute $2 million. RADS has provided $16 million in financial assistance to over 90 centres since the scheme commenced in 1994.
