Government to initiate review of National Trust (WA)
19/12/01
The State Government will conduct a public sector management review of the National Trust (WA) after findings detailed by the Auditor General in his annual audit of the agency.
The 2000-01 annual audit found controls exercised by the National Trust in relation to the receipt and expenditure of funds were not adequate and did not comply with relevant legislative provisions.
Environment and Heritage Minister Dr Judy Edwards said the findings were of concern - and needed to be acted upon.
"In line with the State Government's key commitment to accountability, a review will be conducted to examine the management and operations of the trust," Dr Edwards said.
"A key part of the review will be to examine whether the trust has an appropriate policy and procedural framework - and adequate management - to ensure compliance with relevant legislative provisions."
Dr Edwards said the review would also consider if the Act, under which the National Trust operated, needed to be amended.
"The review will examine if amendments are required to help to clarify the trust's role and responsibility with Government and ensure the trust can perform to its functions," she said.
The assessment will also incorporate Machinery of Government recommended review on statutory authorities.
"The review will consider the existing organisation of the National Trust - and if there is need for improved structures," the Minister said.
The review will be completed by February 28 next year.
