Grant to boost waste management strategy in Broome
7/12/01
A $15,600 Waste Management and Recycling Fund grant will assist the Shire of Broome to develop a Waste Management Strategy to improve recycling, waste disposal and waste reduction in the region, Environment and Heritage Minister Judy Edwards announced today.
Dr Edwards said the strategy would address a number of issues facing Broome in relation to recycling.
"In particular, the plan will propose ways to improve recycling efforts, including enhancing the current kerbside recycling service," she said.
"The strategy will also look at the current landfill operation and provide options to extend its life through recycling and waste minimisation.
"This includes the assessment of procedures and timing for progressing to a new site if necessary, and the development of a small vehicle transfer station incorporating recycling."
Dr Edwards said the Shire of Broome had shown a commitment to identifying the most appropriate methods for managing waste in the region, which could include a number of alternatives to traditional landfill.
"Practices already adopted in the region to encourage recycling and resource recovery have included stock piling of green waste and processing into mulch, and increasing charges for the disposal of non-recyclable wastes," she said.
"This has encouraged local business to consider the use of recyclable materials when commencing projects, or to recycle their own waste wherever possible.
"For example, a private transport company already operates a recycling service for engine oils and dripping from food premises.
"The new strategic plan will identify ways in which the community can be encouraged to make better use of these services."
Dr Edwards said the Waste Management and Recycling Fund collected almost $5million from the landfill levy each year, which was used to sponsor waste reduction and recycling activities throughout the State.
About $7.4million in grants had been paid to community groups, businesses and local governments since the fund was established in July 1998.
Applications for Waste Management and Recycling grants are invited every two months. Further information is available from the Department of Environmental Protection on 9222 8608.
