Western Australian community groups and local councils have been urged to take advantage of State Government funding for energy projects leading to reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Launching the local government and community partnership scheme, Energy Minister Eric Ripper said the initiative aimed to encourage more efficient energy use in Western Australia.
Mr Ripper said the $250,000 Sustainable Energy Development Office (SEDO) grant scheme was expected to boost community and local government investment in greenhouse mitigation measures.
"The Sustainable Energy Development Office will provide matching funds for projects initiated by local government and community groups aimed at delivering or leading to energy-related greenhouse gas emission reductions," he said.
"Most of the individual grants are expected to be in the range of $5,000 to $30,000, but applications for smaller or larger amounts will be considered.
"Households in Australia are responsible for about one-fifth of all greenhouse gas emissions. Using energy more efficiently is a practical way in which Western Australians can play their part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions while saving money as well.
"Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a shared responsibility. This initiative is a tangible way for the Government and the community to work together for a better environment.
"The State Government is delivering another of its election commitments and in doing so is recognising the environment and sustainability as important community values."
The Government, through the Sustainable Energy Development Office, is committed to:

  • increasing the uptake of renewable energy;
  • improving the efficiency of energy use; and
  • encouraging the development of a sustainable energy industry in Western Australia.
