Growing WA agrifood exports to China and Hong Kong
2/6/04
The State Government has strengthened its promotion of Western Australia agrifood products to growing markets in Hong Kong and China.
Agriculture Minister Kim Chance today announced the appointment of a business development consultant who will help build export trade development, enhance two-way investment attraction and business alliances.
China is the second largest market for WA agrifood products and the new position will devote special emphasis to the Pearl River Delta Areas in Guangdong Province.
"The State Government strongly supports the establishment and expansion of industries targeting export market growth, particularly in the area of agricultural production and processing," Mr Chance said.
"Due to the enormity of the Chinese market, the Guangdong Province has been targeted because of its position as China's largest provincial economy, its importance as a route for trade into Southern China and its proximity to Hong Kong.
"Opportunities exist for WA to increase exports in milk powder, seafood, live cattle and other meat products, based on the current exports from Australia.
"The Department of Agriculture and the Department of Industry and Resources will work with the consultant to also promote other sectors such as fisheries, education and training, tourism, ITC, building and construction and consumer products."
Total agrifood and fisheries exports to China and Hong Kong from WA in 2002-03 were valued at $575million.
The main agrifood exports to China from WA include wool, cereals (mainly barley), seafood, sheep and cattle products. WA exports all the barley, about 75 per cent of the crayfish and just under 20 per cent of the wool products from Australia to China.
Ms Sherry Lin has been appointed as the senior consultant - Western Australian Trade Development. Ms Lin previously worked for Dah Chong Hung (DCH) which is a major food importer and distributor in Hong Kong. Prior to that, she spent three years in Shanghai.
Ms Lin will operate from the Austrade office in Hong Kong and service the market in Hong Kong, Macau, and the Guangdong (Pearl River Delta) area in China.
