Haase must join fight for fair share of AusLink funding: Minister
8/6/05
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan has urged Kalgoorlie MP Barry Haase to support the Gallop Government's call for increased Commonwealth funding to improve the East-West Rail Link.
During yesterday afternoon's estimates hearing, Ms MacTiernan said she was concerned that Mr Haase had not supported the Gallop Government's recent approach to Federal Transport Minister John Anderson for increased funding.
Ms MacTiernan is seeking AusLink support for a $30million program to install new crossing loops and sleepers between Kewdale and Kalgoorlie.
"I am very disturbed to hear that Mr Haase may not have supported the Gallop Government's recent approach for Federal funding," she said.
"Western Australia is only receiving $14million of $1.8billion in Federal rail funds.
"Given this is less than a one per cent share, every WA-based Federal MP, including Mr Haase, should be knocking on Mr Anderson's door demanding a better deal.
"Mr Haase needs to outline exactly where he stands on our call for much-needed rail improvements."
Ms MacTiernan said the proposed eight new crossing loops and re-sleepering of about 75km of the line would help bring the line to national standards and create new capacity.
"The line is currently at full capacity - this is slowing down both the freight trains and the prospector," the Minister said.
"We need the new passing loops to create more time slots, meaning a safer more efficient rail system with direct benefits to the Goldfields region.
