Halls Creek Shire gets housing boost
18/3/03
The State Government has given the Halls Creek Shire a $100,000 grant to provide extra staff accommodation.
Housing Minister Tom Stephens announced in Halls Creek today that the grant would help the Shire provide housing for a youth services officer, a tourist centre manager and a community development officer.
Mr Stephens said the shire needed to attract suitably qualified and experienced people to fill positions within its workforce in critical areas of service provision.
"With housing a barrier to the sustainability and growth of the shire, I am pleased to announce assistance to support the shire which has embarked on a development program that has seen new projects and population growth," he said.
"The shire has achieved the fifth largest percentage population growth of Western Australian local government areas, with increased mining and tourism activity.
"It is an active shire that had embarked on a hospital upgrade and a community resource centre, and clearly needs the right professional staff to support its programs."
Mr Stephens said the grants were allocated through the Housing Development Incentive Scheme, and delivered by the Country Housing Authority with funds from the Regional Infrastructure Funding Program and the Department of Housing and Works.
They were part of a $1.25million boost to rural and remote regions of Western Australia to improve housing availability.
