Healthy breakfast to launch Cycle Instead Bikeweek 2004
12/3/04
More than 3,000 cyclists are expected to roll into Forrest Place in the city today for a healthy breakfast and the official launch of Cycle Instead Bikeweek 2004.
The popular Bike To Work Breakfast on Friday March 12 will kick off a 14-day program of individual events that focus on the benefits of cycling as a means of commuting, health improvement and recreation.
The Cycle Instead Bikeweek 2004 program is organised by the Department for Planning and Infrastructure and has been expanded to include more than 50 different activities throughout the State.
The Parliamentary Secretary to the Planning and Infrastructure Minister Ken Travers said the 2004 events would offer a wonderful opportunity for even the most inexperienced riders to enjoy the pleasure that cycling could bring.
"The event caters for cyclists at every level, from those who only ride occasionally for recreation, to the people who choose a bike as a primary mode of transport or to ride in competitive events," Mr Travers said.
"Cycle Instead Bikeweek often introduces the occasional rider to the many health and environmental benefits of cycling, that they may not have previously considered.
"Choosing a bike over your car for at least a few trips can also save as much as $50 a week in parking, petrol and maintenance costs.
"At the same time you can get your 30 minutes of exercise per day recommended by health authorities and play a role in reducing air pollution."
According to the Health Department 68 per cent of Western Australians have insufficient levels of physical activity and are overweight or obese.
"Our interconnected web of shared paths and on-road cycling facilities is world class and the envy of other Australian capital cities.
