Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan today opened a high-technology licence plate manufacturing facility in Malaga.
Ms MacTiernan said the facility operated by LicenSys Pty Ltd would manufacture all vehicle licence plates for Western Australia as well as for South Australia and Tasmania
"This facility employs 12 people and provides opportunities for local businesses in providing equipment and services to support its operations," she said.
"Last year some 239,000 state-series plates and more than 13,000 custom plates, a 15 per cent increase on the previous year, were issued in WA.
"The new advanced facility will be able to meet the growing demand for customised plates and has the potential to manufacture plates for export, which will provide additional employment and business opportunities."
Queensland-based LicenSys Pty Ltd was awarded the $18million, seven-year contract to manufacture number plates in WA following a rigorous tender process.
Ms MacTiernan said that LycenSys was developing E-plate technology - licence plates with deeply sealed electronic chips each with its own unique identifier and readable by existing technology.
"This advance could benefit traffic management and make it easier to track stolen cars and monitor heavy haulage compliance," she said.
WA's vehicle licence plates had previously been manufactured by sign company Altona Industries Pty Ltd. A large number of former Altona staff accepted an offer of employment with LicenSys.
