The highest score on record, six 'A' grades and outstanding commitment to excellence were the benchmarks set by the two Beazley Medallists for 2002, announced in Kings Park today by Education Minister Alan Carpenter.
The winner of the 2002 Beazley Medal TEE (Tertiary Entrance Examinations) is Jolene Yap, of St Hilda's Anglican School for Girls, and the top vocational student and winner of the 2002 Beazley Medal VET (Vocational Education and Training) is Natasha Pierce, of Clarkson Community High School.
Mr Carpenter congratulated the Curriculum Council award winners and all students for their efforts throughout 2002.
"More than 20,000 students completed year 12 in Western Australia last year with 740 students winning just over 1000 awards," he said.
"The extremely high standards achieved signal the outstanding abilities and efforts of our students across the State."
The Minister said the award-winners were already well on the road to life success, thanks to their own talents and hard work, the efforts of their teachers and the resources of the education system.
"Jolene's Curriculum Council score of 99.24 is the highest Beazley Medal score on record since new calculation methods were introduced in 1997," he said.
Previous Beazley Medal TEE scores over the past five years: 2001 (97.92), 2000 (98.97), 1999 (97.21), 1998 (97.02); 1997 (95.9).
"In her six TEE subjects, Jolene scored 100 in Chemistry, Calculus and Music, 98.78 in Applicable Mathematics, 97.42 in English Literature and 94.10 in Physics - an outstanding effort," Mr Carpenter said.
The Minister said Jolene would also receive a General Exhibition and a Certificate of Excellence.
"Jolene is dux of St Hilda's, has received a bronze medal representing WA in the 2002 Chemistry Olympiad and has an interest in debating. Diverse talents and she is successful in all of them," he said.
Also an outstanding violinist, Jolene was awarded State music prizes in 2001 and 2002. She says she wants to study music performance this year.
Winner of the Beazley Medal VET Natasha Pierce completed 515 hours of VET studies, including 495 hours in the business and clerical industry area.
Natasha has achieved a Certificate 2 in Business. She received six 'A' grades (for Vocational English, Modelling with Mathematics, Computer Fundamentals, Food Production, Business Financial Management, and Structured Workplace Learning - Business and Clerical).
"The VET program in schools is providing a viable and relevant educational alternative for those students whose career interests are not adequately served by the TEE curriculum," Mr Carpenter said.
He said Natasha's excellent performance would also see her receive the Subject Exhibition and a Certificate of Distinction in Business Financial Management, a Certificate of Distinction in Modelling with Mathematics and a Certificate of Excellence.
Natasha plans to become an accountant by completing a diploma and advanced diploma in accounting at TAFE and then a degree course at a university. She has applied to attend West Coast College of TAFE for this year.
Natasha supervised the front-of-house for her school's winning effort in a State-wide restaurant competition for schools held this year. She has also participated in a number of public speaking events, including addressing the WA Council of State School Organisations 2002 conference.
All awards will be presented at the Curriculum Council Awards Presentation Ceremony at Murdoch University on Tuesday, March 4.
