Forestry Minister Kim Chance today opened a timber products building display centre in Wembley which points the way to the future of the timber industry in Western Australia.
The Timber Advisory Centre's Lifestyle Home and Exhibition Centre was built with a $252,500 grant under the South-West Industry Assistance Scheme.
Mr Chance said the scheme was part of the State Government's commitment to a responsible and sustainable native forest timber industry.
The centre features an architect-designed, two-storey timber home which combines plantation softwoods, native hardwoods and modern building materials.
It also includes advice and displays demonstrating timber products, with a strong emphasis on value-added goods.
"The importance of this display centre and home is that it shows the new shape of the timber industry in WA," the Minister said.
"Unlike homes of the past, pine has been used for construction and framework.
"And our unique native timbers - jarrah, karri and sheoak - from sustainable resources have been used for value-adding components such as joinery, doors, floors and decorative applications.
"The Government's Protecting Our Old Growth Forests policy aims to create a sustainable timber industry in terms of employment and investment, while at the same time ensuring the South-West native forests are managed on an ecologically sustainable basis.
"And this display centre is a good step in that direction."
The Lifestyle Concept Home and Display Centre is located at the Home Base complex in Salvado Road, Wembley.
