Innovation in housing designs on display

Housing Minister Tom Stephens says he has been impressed with the innovation in housing designs which are part of the Royal Institute of Architect's Light/Houses exhibition at the Cullity Gallery, University of WA.
Speaking at the opening, Mr Stephens said that the 16 designs used sunlight and lightweight materials with a visually stunning result.
"We have been committed to housing and commercial architecture which originated in a colder climate for too long and I am pleased to see architects now making the best use of our own natural assets," Mr Stephens said.
"The designs featured are imaginative and functional and blend with the environment."
He praised local architects Donaldson and Warn, whose Goddard House in Fremantle was one of the designs featured.
"In designing an ultra-modern lightweight house, Donaldson and Warn have still managed to allude to the history of the site as a former truck depot, by giving it an industrial feel," Mr Stephens said.
The Minister said that designing homes for the future needed vision and the designers of the homes highlighted in the exhibition, had proved they had an eye for detail and an ability to look towards current and long term living needs.
