Premier Geoff Gallop today accused the WA Liberal Party of undermining the State Government's commitment to protecting the State from a terror attack.
Dr Gallop said he was shocked and disappointed by the Liberals' decision to reject Clause 20 of the Government's terror legislation in the Upper House this afternoon.
Clause 20 is about challenging the issuing of warrants that allow the Police Commissioner to take action in the event of an imminent terrorist attack, or in the aftermath of such an attack.
The warrant would give the commissioner the power to target areas, persons or vehicles for the purpose of 'stop and search' in order to circumvent acts of terrorism.
The Premier said this was not an arrest power but, of course, arrests may follow.
"Senior police have reiterated to me this afternoon that they need this power to protect us from a terrorist attack," Dr Gallop said.
"The ability of the police to act swiftly and decisively in an emergency situation is now threatened.
"This legislation has been dangerously weakened by the rejection of this clause - and it was supported by the Liberals in the Lower House.
"By opposing this clause - which is in NSW, NT and SA - the Liberals and Greens have undermined the safety of the community.
"I call on the Leader of the Opposition to guarantee this afternoon that his party will reverse their irresponsible position and support the State Government in protecting Western Australia from terrorists."
