An exhibition celebrating the Australian honours system and the extraordinary achievements of ordinary Australians opens at the Prospectors' and Miners' Hall of Fame tomorrow.
Premier Dr Geoff Gallop said the exhibition would be at the Hall of Fame until mid-January.
Dr Gallop said he was keen to include Kalgoorlie in the program in order to give the people in the region an opportunity to gain some insight into the honours system and have an awareness of the range of people who have received the awards.
The exhibition includes an interactive touch screen computer and video presentation, some fascinating stories of honours recipients and a collection of medals (or insignia) of Australian honours covering the range of awards for both civilian and military service.
The Premier said he would encourage people to visit the display which features the stories of some of our Western Australian heroes and recognises the outstanding contribution these people have made, not only to their communities, but also to the State and to the nation.
"I am hopeful that the exhibition will assist to lift the cloak of mystique off the honours system," he said.
In welcoming the display John Bowler MLA, Member for Eyre, said the region had a rich history of talented citizens, who had made significant contributions to the improvement of the economic and social well-being of their fellow Australians and often without being duly recognised.
Mr Bowler said the information provided by the exhibition would assist and encourage local people to consider nominating some of the talented and unsung heroes from within the region, whose deeds and achievements should be recognised by the Australian honours system.
