Jim McGeough honoured as Freeman of the City of Subiaco
12/2/03
Local Government and Regional Development Minister Tom Stephens today presented former City of Subiaco Town Clerk/Engineer Jim McGeough with the title of Honorary Freeman of the City of Subiaco.
The Honorary Freeman of the City of Subiaco is a rarely-made honour, given only to individuals who are widely recognised for their significant contribution to the city.
Speaking at the official ceremony, the Minister commended Mr McGeough for his outstanding commitment to community service in the city for more than 20 years.
"Mr McGeough has clearly demonstrated many years of outstanding achievement and ongoing leadership in improving the city for the people of Subiaco," Mr Stephens said.
"The initiatives he has undertaken have had a lasting impact on the city, particularly the early implementation of recycling, waste management and facilitating underground power lines.
"He is held in high regard by the citizens of Subiaco and this is an honour richly deserved."
Mr McGeough's many achievements since 1973 include:
- overseeing the repair and extension of drainage in the city centre as part of the Regional Employment Development Scheme;
- overseeing the conversion of the Town Hall to the Subiaco Theatre Centre and obtaining an after-hours play centre at Subiaco Primary School;
- assisting with the adoption of the Coat of Arms in 1984;
- chairing the WA Branch of Keep Australia Beautiful and initiating a wide range of recycling programs;
- initiating the underground powerline program in Subiaco in 1982; and
- improving the streetscape and implementing a program of replanting verge trees.
