Kalgoorlie-Boulder named 2002 top tourist town in Western Australia

Kalgoorlie-Boulder has been named Western Australia's top tourist town for 2002.
Presenting the award on behalf of Tourism Minister Clive Brown, Parliamentary Secretary Ken Travers said the GWN Brand WA Top Tourism Town Awards recognised towns that had improved or developed tourism assets to enhance their appeal as a holiday destination.
Kalgoorlie-Boulder won $20,000 to finance projects that would further enhance tourism in the town.
"Kalgoorlie-Boulder has displayed its commitment to the development of tourism and has worked hard to attract and welcome visitors," Mr Travers said.
"The awards acknowledge the important contribution that community involvement adds to the development of tourist facilities and experiences.
"Kalgoorlie-Boulder's ability to embrace all community and industry sectors impressed the judges. The town is a very worthy winner."
Three towns were awarded special commendations and each won $10,000.
Broome was recognised for its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability.
Geraldton was commended for the development of a unique tourism awareness campaign and Kalbarri was recognised for involvement and commitment in working with tourism stakeholders.
"Each town also has outstanding tourism products in place, providing visitors with exceptional experiences," Mr Travers said.
He said the State Government was committed to supporting the development of tourism in country areas.
"About 60 per cent of all visitors to Western Australia travel to regional areas and it is vital that we continue to support the development of tourism in country areas," he said.
"As part of the State Government's election commitment, $2million over four years was committed to regional tourism to assist communities identify local tourism potential and support new marketing and promotional initiatives. A further $2million over four years was committed to assist country visitor centres. Successful applicants for 2002-2003 - the second year of the funding - will be announced in the coming weeks."
