The construction and internal fit-out of one of the Pilbara Development Commission's major infrastructure projects, the permanent Visitors' Centre in Karijini National Park, is nearing completion, Minister for the Pilbara Tom Stephens said today.
The visitors' centre is a joint initiative between the Pilbara Development Commission, Department of Conservation and Land Management and the Karinjini Park Council.
"The project is of great significance to the local Aboriginal people who are looking forward to celebrating the official opening of the centre in a few months time," Mr Stephens said.
"The centre will play an important role in promoting Aboriginal economic independence through the development of Aboriginal cultural tourism enterprises and in providing increased employment opportunities.
"It is expected the Visitors' Centre will raise the profile of the park as a world-class, nature-based tourist attraction.
"This diversification into alternative economic activities such as tourism is seen as important to the region, particularly for the inland towns of Tom Price and Newman that currently rely almost exclusively on the resource sector.
"The Visitors' Centre will make a striking addition to the park's facilities and houses an impressive interpretative display that reflects extensive consultation with traditional owners.
"The display highlights the strong relationship of Aboriginal people with the land. It incorporates traditional stories, artefacts and information ranging from the traditional to more recent history of the Bunjima, Yinhawangka and Kurrama people."
Mr Stephens said he looked forward to sharing in the celebrations of a new facility for the region at the opening in the near future.
