Funding has been brought forward from next financial year to enable an earlier than expected completion of road improvements between Karlgarin and Hyden.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said $1million was already budgeted to be spent on the final 5.3km of the Karlgarin-Hyden section of Brookton Highway in 2003-04.
"An additional amount of about $1million had been brought forward for improvements near Karlgarin which will see widening of this section completed," Ms MacTiernan said.
"It means works to finalise the project can be started in November and completed by May 2004, delivering safety and economic benefits sooner than first anticipated.
"This will have enormous benefits for local traffic as well as tourist and freight transport.
"About 250 vehicles use this section of the highway each day, and Hyden receives some 100,000 visitors each year to Wave Rock, so a lot of the traffic consists of tourist coaches."
This latest upgrading, which will complete widening of Brookton Highway between the two centres, takes expenditure on this section of road over the past three years, to nearly $6million.
