After taking six years to fill with water, Lake Kepwari - the former coal mine void at Collie - had its first waterskiers testing the waterbody at an Open Day last weekend.
Close to 400 people turned up on Saturday, May 14, for the open day at Lake Kepwari and the Collie Motorplex.
The day was organised by the South West Development Commission, Motoring South West and Premier Coal.
South-West Minister Mark McGowan said three waterski boats from Collie, Perth and the South-West were the first to try the lake and described it as among the best waterski venues in the State.
"The skiers said the lake provides perfect conditions for the sport because of its size and its bushland location protects it from the elements," Mr McGowan said.
Visitors to the two sites were able to see work in progress at the Collie Motorplex, which is currently being expanded.
"One of the features of the work at the Motorplex is the construction of a tunnel under the circuit to allow spectator cars to enter the pit area while racing is under way," the Minister said.
Despite threatening weather, visitors were able to view both venues with a 45-seater bus running for five hours between the two sites.
They were treated to water ski demonstrations, drag races and burnouts, as well as Paul Jane and his talented band of singers, who provided non-stop entertainment.
Motoring South West also fed the masses with a sausage sizzle and there were balloons and free giveaways for the kids.
Collie MLA Mick Murray said the day was an excellent opportunity for people to see Collie's tourism icons.
"It was fantastic to see so many people out and about in Collie and experiencing what we have to offer," he said.
"It was also a good chance for everyone to see our newest attractions."
